LAUSD ACHIEVEMENTS
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is the second largest public school district in the United States, serving 694,288 K-12 students who represent one of the most diverse student populations in the nation.

Classroom Performance

  • The number of LAUSD schools that have met or exceeded the California Department of Education’s Academic Performance Index (API) goal of 800 was 111 in 2007.  An API score is a number that summarizes the performance of a group of students, a school, or a district on California’s standardized tests.

  • The API score of elementary schools in the LAUSD increased 242 points over the past eight years, jumping from 489 in 1999 to 731 in 2007.
  • In all, 91 percent of LAUSD schools have an API score of 600 or higher this year, compared to only 24 percent in 1999.
  • Last year, 15 LAUSD schools were removed from Program Improvement status after having successfully met their Adequate Yearly Progress targets for two consecutive years under the No Child Left Behind Act.

District Awards & Recognitions

  • Forty-two LAUSD schools received the 2007-08 Title I Academic Achievement Award from the California Department of Education for successfully ensuring that all students made significant progress toward proficiency in California’s academic content standards. Seventy-six LAUSD schools were recognized in 2006-07.
  • Thirty-one LAUSD schools have earned designations by the California Business for Education Excellence Foundation and Just for the Kids California as 2007 Honor Roll schools.
  • Six schools in the LAUSD have been recognized as 2007 California Distinguished Schools by the California Department of Education, an honor that recognizes exemplary educational programs and academic excellence. Since 1987, 97 schools in the District have been awarded this highly sought and prestigious honor.

School Recognitions

  • The Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies (LACES) was ranked 46th among the top 50 public high schools in the United States by Newsweek magazine in 2007.  Another 33 high schools in LAUSD earned recognition among the top 1,200 U.S. high schools in the nation.
  • In 2007, two elementary schools—Ellen Ochoa Learning Center and Vintage Math, Science and Technology Magnet School—were named Explorer Schools by the National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA).
  • U.S. News and World Report magazine named LACES and Bravo Medical Magnet High School among the top 100 high schools in the United States in 2007.

  • Harbor Teacher Preparation Academy is nominated for the prestigious 2008 No Child Left Behind Blue School Schools Program. The academy is one of only 35 public schools in the state nominated for the award.

The foundation publicly recognizes and rewards elementary and secondary school teachers, principals and other education professionals for furthering excellence in education.

  • Lewis Chappelear, an engineering and design teacher at Monroe High School, and a recipient of the California Teacher of the Year Award, was nominated by the State Superintendent of Education for the 2008 National Teacher of the Year Award.

  • North Hollywood High School’s Science Olympiad team earns second place honors at the 23rd Annual California State Science Olympiad competition, which promotes student interest in science and improves the quality of K-12 science education.

Other Milestones

  • Since 2001, the LAUSD has constructed 69 new schools, while 59 additions and full-day kindergarten has been implemented at 491 schools. As a result of the District's bond-funded Existing Families Modernization and Repair Program in 1997, 16,575 modernization and projects have been completed district-wide.
