Statement by LAUSD Superintendent David L. Brewer III on the Approval of the 2008-09 California State Budget

LAUSD appreciates the work legislators have done to preserve funding for education, but the result is a budget for education that does not compare well to other states and does not provide enough allowance for inflationary costs.

LAUSD has already made two years of substantial reductions to its central office workforce. The District was also able to avoid increasing class sizes for 2008-09, but class size increases must be on the agenda for 2009-10, given the cumulative effect of state revenues that don’t include a sufficient cost of living adjustment.

LAUSD made significant academic gains in 2007-08. Unfortunately, this budget could have an adverse impact on the District’s ability to sustain these gains in the future.

The School that Graphically Develops Career Opportunities
As a Fremont High School student in the late 1960s, Clarence Williams created a towel holder in wood shop, a dustpan in metal shop and a small motor in electrical shop.
But when he stepped into his fourth shop class, graphic arts, Williams felt like a fish out of water. In fact, he was ready to drop the class. Reassuring words from a classmate kept Williams from dropping the class—and altering the course of his career. “My friend said, ‘don’t worry about it, I’ll show you.’ I ultimately got a B in that class and I got hooked.” Click here for story.
